Hello. I’m Leanne. I write and illustrate children’s books. This is where words turn into pictures and stories are stitched together from weather, wonder, and the quiet things children say.

My debut picture book, Please Cloud, Don’t Cry, is inspired by a sentence our then 6 year old neurodivergent daughter spoke during a sunny walk in 2018, a rare moment of spontaneous speech from a little girl whose only form of communication was to sing songs and recite long passages from her favourite books.

It’s the first of many stories to come, all created with care, all rooted in the everyday wonder of childhood.

Thank you for being here.

Another small cloud spotted in the wild ☁️

This lovely young reader wore his amazing cloud hat for World Book Day at school and only went and WON 🏆 best dressed, then shared Please Cloud, Don’t Cry with his whole class.

I’ve covered his face here ☁️ but I promise you the smile behind that cloud could brighten the greyest sky 🥹

It’s the loveliest feeling seeing this story wander out into the world like this. It began with one quiet sentence from a little girl looking up at the sky, and now there are cloud hats, classrooms, and children carrying the story in their hands.

Books really do have little lives of their own, making their way to the most amazing places.

P.S. This was originally shared in his mum’s stories and I would have completely missed it if she hadn’t kindly sent me a message. If you ever share a photo and I don’t repost it, it usually just means I haven’t seen it yet so please do send me a DM. I’m very glad this lovely mum did. Thank you, Amy. ☁️ @amyandeth_2018

Yesterday I travelled from Yorkshire up to Cumbria to read Please Cloud, Don’t Cry with the wonderful home education group up there! Some of the parents there weren’t strangers at all. Years ago, when distance didn’t matter quite so much, we used to meet regularly on Zoom for Roald Dahl lessons during Covid. So it was rather lovely to meet them properly again.

The children were curious, thoughtful and beautifully polite AND I even got to meet a real-life Lorax in the room (amazing costume by Jess and her gorgeous baby bump 🧡✨) which felt perfectly fitting for a gathering of children who clearly love stories.

The whole afternoon had that warm, caring feeling that home educating families do so well, parents and children learning together, imagination very much welcome.

Thank you Teresa @wildchildlearning (the beautifully dressed Mary Poppins) and everyone in the Cumbria home education group for inviting me. It was such a joy to see some friendly faces again and meet some new ones too ♥️📚

You are a really lovely special group 🥹
On World Book Day a lovely Dad sent this photograph of his daughter dressed as the little girl from Please Cloud, Don’t Cry. The very same Dad who left the most beautiful review when the book was first published.

Blue overdress, pink long-sleeved top. Exactly like her 🥹 He told me she reads the book every night.

When I wrote this story, I was quietly hoping it might reach children who feel the world deeply. The ones who sometimes need a den, a pause, a soft place to think. And it has!

Thank you for choosing my book for World Book Day. And Imy… I’m so glad you love the girl (and the book) so much ☁️🥲

A little World Book Day note for parents and small readers.

If your Instagram account is private and you tag me in a post, there’s a chance I might not see it. Instagram keeps private posts within your circle, which means some of the loveliest moments may be quietly passing me by.

So if your child has been reading Please Cloud, Don’t Cry, drawing the cloud, or even dressing up as the cloud/girl or even the little mice for World Book Day (which would truly make my day), please do DM me so I can see and share your posts.

Seeing the book turn up in bedtime routines, drawings, and little imaginations is the greatest joy for any author. Thank you for letting my story live in your homes. ☁️
